• Windows Phone 8

The new Windows Phone 8 is here and it’s going to make a splash according to Microsoft insiders. Unveiled during the Windows Phone Summit on Wednesday, the new smartphone is said to have 8 new features. As Microsoft fans gather around to see what these new features are, Apple iPhone fanatics are wondering whether these new features will have the capability to topple or (to challenge at least) the iPhone’s supremacy.

    A New Start Screen

Insiders say that there is a new start screen for the new Windows 8 Phone and what’s great about it is that it’s customizable –talk about making your Windows phone really YOUR phone.

    Digital Wallet

Worried your wallet might get stolen? Worry no more because you can have a digital version of it through the new Windows 8 Phone’s digital wallet. How does this work? It will store all your credit cards, loyalty cards, boarding passes, etc and will also enable you to do tap-to-pay transactions if you get a secure SIM from your carrier.

    Screen Resolution Oh-La-La

Oh yes! The new Windows 8 Phone OS will be able to support two kinds of screen resolutions, well not two kinds, two rather. They are 1280×768 and 1280×720 making it possible for you to have a crystal clear high definition experience with the new smartphone.

    More apps and games

Need we say more? Microsoft knows you love your apps and your games so they are providing you with more through the Windows 8 Marketplace.

    Better Maps: Bing No More

Yep, Microsoft will no longer be using its own Bing maps but will instead use that of Nokia’s –a better mapping software according to experts.

    Better Hardware

The new smartphone have multicore processors which makes things run beautifully and of course smoothly.

    Expandable Storage

You can now have removable SD cards on your windows phone. This will make it easier for you to transfer files from your computer to your phone as well.

    Wireless Sharing

NFC enabled devices will be able to share data with each other.

  • Microsoft Tablet to challenge iPad

    Photo via Microsoft

Can Microsoft’s Surface tablet beat the iPad? According to tech experts, only one question matters when it comes to the launch of a new tablet and this question is whether it can topple the iPad.

With the release of so many tablets in the market this year, not one has been able to muster a real challenge to the Apple device.

According to a research firm IDC, the iPad will be raking in 62% of the market share this 2012 leaving its wannabe competitors scrabbling around with what’s left.

Now that Microsoft has entered the tablet market however, tech experts say that it will be quite an event and many predict that the new device will go head to head with the iPad series.

Surface for Windows RT, iPad’s Rival?

Reports say that two models of Surface will be released –Surface for Windows 8 Pro and Surface for Windows RT. The Windows RT version will be iPad’s rival, sources say. However, Microsoft said that the Pro model is more powerful and is being introduced as a direct competitor of the MacBook Air.

    What about the screen size?

The iPad’s 9.7 inch screen is no match to the Surface’s 10.6 inch display. This means there will be plenty of space for you to do anything from working on your documents to playing online games to watching movies.

Microsoft’s tablet has a longer battery life.

Yes, Microsoft is aiming for better performance and according to insiders; the tablet from the company has a long battery life. This hasn’t been confirmed though but what we know right now is that Windows RT’s battery is 31.5Wh while that of the iPad is 42.5. A clever power management will be needed, experts say, for it to topple the Apple device’s battery life.

The RT will not have a full HD screen but the Windows 8 Pro version will be.

  • Steve Jobs and Triumph of the Nerds

Triumph of the Nerds making a comeback?

PBS has made so much money out of this documentary when it was released and now, in the year 2012, it is making a comeback. Nope it is not a new documentary, it is just basically the same documentary but Cringely said that they have included an hour-long interview of Steve Jobs that wasn’t included in the 1996 film.

It was show in theaters recently and from what we heard it is still on show in some theaters in the country. We are not sure though but it might be something worth checking out.

After Steve Jobs’ death, many people in the world have become more interested in the technology legend than they ever were. In fact, it almost feels like the world of technology lost its Diana.

Who was Steve Jobs? Those who have followed Steve Jobs for so long already know his story but aside from his success, many are interested in his early life –his biological parents and why they sent him for adoption.

The American inventor and businessman was born in San Francisco in the year 1955 to two university students. His real parents were Joanne Carole Schieble and Abdulfattah Jandali. Since his parents were unmarried at the time and Joanne’s father did not approve of Steve’s Syrian father, Steve was put up for adoption.

He was adopted by Clara and Paul Reinhold Jobs. It is interesting to note that Steve’s biological parents wanted him to be adopted by college graduate couples but his adoptive parents weren’t. Later in life, when Steve was already an influential figure in the world of technology, he said that Paul and Clara are his parents.  He even stated in his authorized biography that they are his parents 1, 000%. It is sad though that his biological parents would later on marry but the two divorced in 1962.

  • Steve Jobs’ Lost Interview

Robert X. Cringely released his interview with technology legend Steve Jobs last year. Ten minutes of the said footage was utilized for the Triumph of the Nerds documentary in the year 1996. It was said that the remainder of it was already lost in those old VHS tapes but according to the iTunes Store in the US, it is now available for rent at the iTunes Store.

The rental price according to sources is $3.99 but Apple will not be promoting it because it is deemed as rather controversial. One blogger said that Apple will never promote it because the topic is a bit sensitive. What is interesting is that it is not even listed in the new releases for iTunes. Curiouser and curiouser eh?

There is nothing insensitive or controversial about it, according to Cringely and critics seem to like it too but it somehow gives one a different perspective of Jobs. Well you probably should be the judge of it once you have seen it.

    Triumph of the Nerds

Triumph of the Nerds: The Rise of Accidental Empires released in 1996 is a documentary written by Robert X. Cringely also known as Mark Stephens. It was produced by Oregon Public Broadcasting, a British company.

The title, according to sources, refers to the film released in 1984 called Revenge of the Nerds and based on Cringely’s Accidental Empres. This is a three-part film. It premiered on PBS in early 1996. If you would like to see the full transcript of the docu itself, you can look for it at the PBS website.

There are three episodes for this documentary starting with Tim Paterson’s 86-DOS duplicating from the CP/M operating system of Gary Kildall. This episode talks about Microsoft purchasing all the rights to DOS for a mere US$50, 000.
